Stepping into a new role

You might be joining your company’s senior leadership team, taking responsibility for a new part of the business, or stepping into your first management role. Even with years of relevant experience, a new role can require you to rethink how you work and find new ways to make an impact. What made you successful in your previous role may not be quite what you need to succeed in this one.

While you may be surrounded by capable and supportive colleagues, you might not always have someone within the organization you feel comfortable discussing your uncertainties or difficult decisions with. Coaching offers a confidential, independent space to explore these situations openly, challenge your assumptions, and consider how you want to approach them.

How can coaching support you in the new role?

Coaching is always tailored to your goals and circumstances. You decide what to focus on in each session, whether it’s an immediate challenge or your longer-term development as a leader.

Some common topics that clients stepping into new roles or taking on greater leadership responsibilities explore in coaching include:

Develop your leadership approach. Examine how your current approach to leadership serves your new role, and explore your values and vision for leadership.

Identify and develop new skills. Reflect on your strengths, identify capabilities you’d like to strengthen, and explore practical ways to develop them.

Rethink your priorities and ways of working. Explore how to manage growing responsibilities, and establish principles for decision-making, delegation, and giving others ownership.

Navigate relationships and expectations. Work through challenges such as managing former peers, inheriting an established team, or building trust with new stakeholders.

Work through difficult situations and decisions. Unpack challenges such as team performance issues, disagreements with stakeholders, or decisions with significant trade-offs. Explore different perspectives and options before deciding how to move forward.
